Fletcher Sponsor a Maggie's Penguin

By Kirsty Fletcher-Reid on 06 Feb 2018

With the recent move of our corporate office to Dundee, Fletcher is eager to be witness to 2018 becoming one of the most exciting years for the City. The opening of the magnificent V&A Museum, the regeneration of the waterfront and holding the coveted title of the UK’s only Unesco City of Design.

We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting time for the city and are proud to announce that in line with these cultural initiatives, Fletcher is sponsoring a Penguin for the Maggie’s Penguin Parade.

For three months in Summer 2018, the streets of Dundee and surrounding region will become home to a trail of individually designed and beautifully decorated giant penguin sculptures. These sculptures will showcase the wealth of artistic talent in the area and create economic and cultural benefits for Dundee. The Parade is a partnership between Maggie’s and Wild in Art, a leading producer of spectacular, mass-appeal public art events, which connect businesses, artists and communities through the power of creativity and innovation. Since 2008, Wild in Art has animated cities across the world, including Sydney, Melbourne and Cape Town, creating trails for the London 2012 Olympics, the 2015 Commonwealth Games, Historic Royal Palaces and many more.

The Maggie’s Centre, Wild in Art, sponsors, artists, schools and the community will come together to welcome 80 individually designed penguin sculptures. These will be accessible by a trail around the city from the 29th June, culminating in a grand farewell event in Slessor Gardens on the 22nd and 23rd of September before a spectacular auction on the 24th September.

Whilst the Penguin Parade is an opportunity to demonstrate the wealth of talent in the area and engage the local community, its focus is for a Charitable cause. Maggie’s Cancer Charity provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their families and friends. It offers a programme of support that has been shown to strengthen physical and emotional wellbeing. Built in the grounds of Ninewells hospital in Dundee, the centre is a place to find practical advice, emotional support, and a place to meet other people in similar situations.

The Centre costs around £540,000 per year to run, and this year, the Penguin Parade initiative aims to raise enough money to keep the centres doors open for an entire year.

Fletcher is incredibly proud to be a part of this exceptionally worthy charitable event by sponsoring one of these beautifully designed penguins. We look forward to keeping you up to date with our design, any penguin photographs, and of course the location of our very own Fletcher Penguin in the upcoming months.
