February 2021 Safety Champion

By Kirsty Fletcher-Reid on 03 Mar 2021

Our latest safety champion award is the perfect example of how important routine maintenance is on board, and demonstrates the high level of attention to detail that all crew are required to have whilst carrying out their duties.

February’s award has been awarded to a member of the deck crew on board Standard Viking. Whilst carrying out routine maintenance, Eduardo Moreira noticed that there was a damaged pin on the windlass brake. The team on board were then able to repair the damaged brake before it developed into a more serious issue.

We would therefore like to thank Eduardo Moreira for his attentiveness and of course congratulate him on winning the coveted title of Safety Champion!

To further exemplify the theme of routine maintenance, we would also like to give a special mention to Standard Supplier AB Lukasz Splawski. Lukasz was carrying out a routine pre work PUWER check on a grinder and identified a faulty switch. This is another excellent example of how important routine maintenance is, and that checking/maintaining prior to use is imperative to the condition of equipment. In this instance, upon further investigation from the vessel ETO, the grinder was condemned.

Once again we thank all contributions to our Safety Observation Card scheme, and look forward to receiving more constructive contributions in the future.
